The hike starts in the canton of Solothurn and ends in Basel Landschaft.

Viewing points

The first stage of the route leads from the Alpenblick Passwang restaurant up to the Vogelberg summit (1’204m), which is one of the highest points in the Passwang mountain range in the Solothurn Jura.

The mountain is not too high, but the views are quite pleasant. The ground, on the other hand, does not pose any walking difficulties up to this point.

After the summit, on the other hand, following the ridge of the Passwang chain, you have to watch your step, as the path is very rocky and easy to trip over.

The trail leads to the next viewpoint, which is located on Chellenchöpfli, at 1’157 m above sea level. At the end of July, various shades of green dominated here. In autumn, the mists are said to envelop the area beautifully.

Wasserfallenhof farm

In front of the upper station of the Wasserfallen mountain railway, just off the road, llamas and horses graze in the meadows and pigs wallow in the mud. This is the Wasserfallenhof farm. Its farmer also breeds other animals, but interestingly enough, in between the farm work, he organises Lamatrekking, a hike in the company of llamas. I must admit that I have never been very comfortable in large ‘human’ groups in the mountains, but with llamas I have never tried it.

Rope park

Next to the station itself is another attraction, namely a rope park with different levels of difficulty. From what I have noticed it has amateurs of all ages. So both children and adults will not be bored here.

The final stage of the route

The longed-for waterfalls and the rushing Hintere Frenke River finally appear on the section leading down. The descent here is not the easiest, as it is very slippery and you need to be concentrated, but the surroundings are fantastic.

The hike ends in the municipality of Reigoldswil, which was once known for its silk ribbon weaving. You can certainly find out more about this at the local museum “im Feld”.

What I did not bring back from this trip were ribbons, but elderflower syrup. This was a novelty for me. With water and mint leaves it is quite tasty. And the self-service shop is located by the roadside, so you certainly won’t miss it.
