From the train station in Schönbühl, we head towards the forest. Quite quickly we leave the buildings and street noise behind. Among the trees it is already quiet and peaceful. This is a good time to relax and soak up the sounds and smells of the forest.
The trail leads mainly along forest paths. So don’t expect big adrenaline spikes, except when climbing the tall Bern – Bantiger TV tower. It measures 192.2 metres high, but the viewing platform is much lower at 42.2 metres. There are 154 steps leading up to it.
Construction of the tower began in 1992 and the inauguration took place five years later. It replaced the old broadcasting tower from 1954, which was 60 metres high. The reason for its construction was the World Cup, which was being held in Switzerland.
I must emphasise that it was this championship that was broadcast live for the first time. The signal was distributed via radio antennas placed on the Bantiger and on the Jungfraujoch. As a result, some 90 million people sat in front of black and white television sets watching the football matches. It must have been a huge event.
Equally sensational is the view from the tower. There’s plenty of space at the top and benches that encourage you to take a break right here and feast your eyes on the panorama.
And finally, a walk through the charming village of Stettlen.
