This scenic trail runs to the village of Weissenburg. It starts at the Gurnigel Wasserscheide stopover at 1’590 m above sea level, which is reached via a serpentine path with beautiful views.
At the start you climb up to the pass at 1’905 m above sea level, from where a fantastic panorama opens up and you continue to the other side of the valley.
It is a bit noisy here, as the views from the car park are sensational, but later it will calm down. Most people go higher, to the 2’176 m high Gantrisch (option for those interested; additional hour). We, on the other hand, follow the path down into this charming valley.
The road in this section is quite straightforward, but certainly not boring. It leads through mountain valleys, pastures, forests and even through a 1925 tunnel hollowed out of the rock. The 111 metre long Leiternweide suspension bridge can be seen along the route. There is also no shortage of mountain streams.
The route ends at the railway station in the village of Weissenburg, which although small, has a rich and interesting history. It is connected with a former spa which was active here in the 19th century and achieved international renown. The building sadly burned down in 1974, but the ruins of the rear bathhouse were renovated between 2014 and 2015 and are open to the public.
As a final curiosity, I would like to add that thermal water, which was discovered as early as 1600, is still piped into a well at Weissenburg railway station. You can of course taste it there and take some for the road. The tap and leaflets with information about the former spa are located in a small wooden shed.
