I hereby open the season for winter hiking. Those who don’t like winter can sleep it off and wait until spring. For the rest of you, pull on your pants and get ready for snowy trails.

First up is a not-too-difficult trail from Lauterbrunnen to the charming mountain village of Mürren, with incredible views of, among other things, the famous trio – the Eiger (3,967m), Mönch (4,107m) and Jungfrau (4,158m).

After leaving the train at the train station in Lauterbrunnen, head towards the Staubbach waterfall (297 m high) and continue walking uphill along the stream.

Climbing up the mountain on slippery leaves and snow, is not the easiest thing to do. I therefore recommend using poles for support on this section.

When you reach the top station of the Grütschalp mountain cable car, head left. Here the route is easier and, importantly, snow-free. So you can concentrate solely on the magnificent views.

Those who want a shorter winter walk of around 1.5 hours can, of course, take the mountain railway up to Grütschalp and only from there start the walk to Mürren.

As a matter of interest, this winter route runs along a very old and still active railway line. The narrow gauge railway (BLM) connecting Grütschalp and Mürren was opened on 14 August 1891. It is about 4 km long and the ride from one station to the other takes about 12 minutes. The train runs all year round.

The last section of the route passes through the charming village of Mürren, still deserted in November, at 1,638 m above sea level.

From Mürren, take two gondolas down to Stechelberg. With a general subscription we then had a free ride.
