After arriving by train at Braunwaldbahn Linthal, we changed transport and set off towards Gumen station, located at 1’901m above sea level. The ascent required two transfers. The first section from Braunwaldbahn Linthal to Braunwald is by overground railway. The next section from Niederschlacht to Hüttenberg is by gondola (general pass holders to this point have a free ride).
The final section from Braunwald Leglerberg (Burstberg) to Gumen is by chairlift. I recommend taking the map at the bottom to help you get your bearings. It is especially useful when the winter season is in full swing and the lifts are jammed with skiers.
The route is not too difficult, but with fantastic views all around. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful snow-covered peaks (e.g. Ortstock 2.717 m, Höchturm 2.666 m, Grisset 2.721 m, Eggstöcke 2.449 m, or on the other side, the mighty Tödi 3.614 m visible from afar).
There was no lack of snow in the area. I think this is good news also for ski and sled lovers. However, the trail was quite well cleared of snow. Nevertheless, snowshoes came in handy in some sections. I must admit that I was happy to put them on. There was also a bit of winter madness with a controlled descent “on all fours”.
The route ends at Braunwald station, from where we took the overground train to the Braunwaldbahn Linthal train station.
