I finally made it to Caumasee. I had been gathering to do this for two seasons. But I guess I’m like that, the more popular a place is, the more time I need to visit it. The hot weather over the past few days, however, has helped me make up my mind.

We started our hike, or rather a leisurely march, in the small village of Flims, located in the canton of Graubünden, and set off towards Caumasee. Once there, it doesn’t really matter whether you take the path along the left or right bank. At the end of the lake, the two paths meet and the trail continues slightly uphill to the Il Spir viewing platform (towards Conn).

Those who wish to bathe before continuing on the path, however, should know that the left bank is fenced and admission is charged. The other bank is undeveloped and ideal for a momentary stop and swim.

After taking in the magnificent view of the Rhine Gorge, continue a little further back and walk towards Crestasee. Those who enjoy swimming in the clear mountain lakes can jump in the water again and dry off on the way back to the Flims Waldhaus bus stop.

The route leads mainly through the forest and is rather easy. There is one longer ascent on the last part of the route behind Crestasee Lake.

The location is also ideal for family walks with a pushchair. Admittedly, there are a few short sections on the route I suggested where it would be difficult to push the pram over protruding tree roots. However, you do not have to stick strictly to this route. You can deviate slightly from the route and follow it on more paved ground.

You can walk the whole way in trekking sandals, or other sport sandals with a thicker sole. I had two pairs of shoes and unfortunately my heavy trekking shoes were worn by my brave husband. So, if you prefer lighter footwear, don’t hesitate to leave your trekking boots at home.

But be sure to take your swimsuit with you. On a hot day, the turquoise water tempts you to jump into it. And there will be two opportunities, at Caumasse and Crestasee.
