Many of you probably associate this place with summer walks and the turquoise colour of the Cauma and Cresta lakes. I can assure you that in winter this place is also enchanting. The meadows, forests and lakes covered in white powder look completely different, more magical. I highly recommend this route, especially in sunny weather.
How to get to Flims
As a bit of practical information, I’ll add that we travelled to Flims by bus number 81 from the bus station in Chur. Admittedly, the ride takes more than thirty minutes, but the views from the window are really sensational and the time goes by quickly.
After exiting at the Flims Dorf Bergbahnen stop, head down into the village. Initially, the route leads through residential areas. Further on, after a few hundred metres on the snow-covered meadows of Rens, you reach the forest, which looks magical in winter.
On the route, do not miss the observation points with magnificent views of the gorge and the Rhine river winding through it, as well as the partially frozen Cauma Lake.
The significance of the name Cauma Lake
As a matter of interest, the name of this lake means “Lake of Afternoon Rest”. This is because in the past its shores were used by shepherds and animals to stop and rest before continuing their journey.
Times have undoubtedly changed, but the name still stands. The place is visited in summer by many who long for relaxation and rest after work and a swim in the turquoise lake.
Returning to the winter route, I will point out that the path is very well prepared for walkers. It is cleared of snow and marked with pink signposts and posts (most of the route – trail 274). It is impossible to get lost. It can be a little slippery in places. So be careful.
Sledding
It is also perfectly suitable for beginners and families with children. However, for the youngest, I would shorten the route by the last section where the road turns left in the centre of the village. This is because it leads uphill and then steeply downhill.
There is another option, and that is that you can take your sledge with you, and at the final stage of the route you can slide down the hill on it.
