The Lumnezia Valley is located in the canton of Graubünden and extends from Ilanz about 25 kilometres to the south-west. After a snowfall, the region turns into an idyllic winter wonderland, which attracts lovers of all kinds of winter sports.
On one frosty morning, it also lured us. Specifically, we were tempted by the winter trail no. 250, which is quite popular in the area. The trail starts near the Vella Sumsiaras bus stop. It is located right next to the ski lift and car park.
The trail is very well prepared for walkers. It is cleared of snow and marked with pink posts. It is impossible to get lost. And the gradients, both at the entrance and when going down behind the lift station, are quite gentle.
Snowshoes are not likely to be of much use on this route. If you are stubborn, you can of course take them with you and walk alongside the snow-covered path. Small-toothed crampons, on the other hand, made it easier for me to walk on the more slippery sections. However, they are not necessary.
On the trail, your eyes are delighted by the magnificent mountain landscape and the view from the top over the valley. Towards the end of the trail, you still have to walk through the charming mountain village of Morissen, located at 1’350 m above sea level.
There were quite a few skiers and sledding enthusiasts around. The latter were a little envious of this carefree and frenetic sliding. Age did not matter here. And the kilometre-long sledge runs looked very inviting.
