After less than four years, I went to the Creux du Van canyon again. I must admit that I was tempted by the photos posted on social media. And besides, places like this are worth returning to.

For variety, I only changed the end of the route (‘Swiss Creux du Van Canyon’ 2017) and I must admit that the trail thus gained additional value. On the other side of the hill, there is a beautiful view of the Lac de Neuchâtel (Neuenburgersee) lake, and in good weather you can also see a range of snow-capped Alpine peaks.

For those who are not yet familiar with the site, I will add some information. The canyon is shaped like a horseshoe, and is located on the border of two cantons – Neuenburg and Waadt. It is accessed via a forest road located a few hundred metres behind the railway station in Noiraigue.

This huge rock arena, more than 1 kilometre in diameter and about 500 metres deep, was formed over millions of years by water and ice. In the middle of the canyon is the “Fontaine Froide” spring, whose water has a constant temperature of 4°C all year round. The area has been protected since 1972 and is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance.

The Arctic-alpine flora here is a paradise for chamois, marmots, grouse, lynx, birds of prey and other wildlife.

The chamois are quite curious and come very close to people. It is better, however, to watch out for the capricorn, which keeps a close eye on its surroundings, flexing and displaying its impressive antlers.

I happened to come across a Capricorn who was obviously very keen on glass. He was grinning at the lens like a professional model, as you can see in the attached photo.

Finally, the first stage of the route leading to the canyon itself requires some effort and patience. The road goes all the way up through the forest. The views are therefore few, but only at the beginning. At the top, your efforts will be rewarded.
