This time we went to the Canton of Obwalden in central Switzerland, specifically to the town of Sarnen, 20 km from Luzern. From there, we took bus 343 to the Stöckalp stop. Then we took a gondola up the mountain to the Melchsee – Frutt station, located at 1,927 m above sea level.
At the top you have a wonderful view of Melchsee. The whole route is fabulous. Along the way you pass two mountain lakes, Melchsee and Tannensee, wrapped in snow-capped mountains, as well as green pastures with grazing animals and an old chapel.
The trail starts with an uphill hike towards Bonistock (2,157 m). Then, descending to Tannalp (1,977 m), you can take a break and visit a local restaurant, or continue on to Erzeg. Afterwards it’s downhill all the way to the start of our route at Melchsee-Frutt station.
If you would like to go straight down and continue to Sarnen by bus, please note that the bus from Stöckalp is not frequent. So instead of waiting at the bus stop below, why not take the time to enjoy the beautiful views. Especially since the mountain railway runs all the time.
Just remember that in summer there are quite a few people queuing for the gondola, so don’t leave Melchsee-Frutt at the last minute.
