There are some places in Switzerland that attract visitors in both summer and winter. Melchsee – Frutt is undoubtedly one of them. The last time we were here was on 5 August 2018 and at that time we were enchanted by the scenery with two mountain lakes, which are surrounded by majestic mountains and green pastures. The landscape is further diversified by small old chapels. Simply an Alpine paradise.
In winter, however, everything was covered in snow. The animals have disappeared from the pastures, and ice fishermen have appeared on the lake. This climate undoubtedly suits us, too.
A few words about the route
As for the route, it is very well marked with pink posts. However, I must admit that it is a bit monotonous at the bottom. You walk like on a snow-covered runway. But at the top, following the Tannalp back towards the Melchsee-Frutt lift, there is definitely more going on.
The ascent to the highest point on the route requires a bit of effort and you can’t do without snowshoes. It is also considerably quieter, as a lot of people finish the trail at the inn at Tannalp. Here you can sit outside and have a bite to eat or a drink while enjoying the magnificent views.
I personally prefer my own lunch in the open air. Therefore, we made a short stop only after climbing the highest hill on this trail. The landmark is a few meters high cross, visible from afar.
Other winter attractions
It has to be said that Melchsee-Frutt attracts lovers of various winter sports. Apart from several ski slopes, there is also an 8 km long toboggan run and cross-country skiing trails. So there is plenty to choose from.
For transport information, we got off at the Sarnen train station to get to Melchsee-Frutt. We then took the number 343 bus for about half an hour to the Stöckalp stop, which is right next to the ski lift. Finally, we took the mountain train up the mountain.
Please note that the bus runs quite rarely. So before taking the cable car already down, check the departure times. Instead of waiting at the bus stop at the bottom, it is worthwhile to enjoy the views for a while longer. Especially since the mountain railway runs all the time.
There is plenty of parking available for motorists.
