The trail leading to the summit of Grosser Mythen is a classic among Alpine hikes. It is loved by both regular and seasonal hikers. The views on this trail are sensational and the route is easily accessible and well prepared.

In addition, the homemade cakes served at the inn on the mountain are undoubtedly a strong point of the route.

It is therefore not surprising to see a procession of hikers who, like ants, pass each other all day long on the narrow serpentine path.

Mythen mountain range

The first section to Holzegg leads through pastures and forest groves. It can also be taken by cable car and thus shorten the route.

The Grosser and Kleiner Mythen look beautiful from this perspective. Although these mountains are not very high, at just 1’898 and 1’811 metres above sea level, they stand out already from a distance. In the empty space they look like two giants, or rather three giants. This is because they are accompanied by the Haggenspitz peak (1’761 m).

I would also add that the lower peaks, Kleine Mythen and Haggenspitz, are not accessible by the hiking trail network. This is already a different category of hiking, reserved for climbers equipped with the right equipment and skills.

The summit of Grosser Mythen offers a panoramic view of the Alps, the Schwyz basin and the lakes of central Switzerland. At the top, you can also sample nut and almond sweet pastries (Mythen Nussgipfel and Mandelgipfel). Just don’t forget to take cash with you, as you can’t pay by card at the inn.

The beginnings of Mythenhaus and the fateful storm

The inn has been in operation since 1991, but the origins of Mythenhaus date back to 1865, when the first hut was built on the summit of Grosser Mythen. This occurred shortly after the opening of the hiking trail leading to the mountain. Unfortunately, the following year the house burned down after a lightning strike.

In 1886, the Mythen section of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC built a new, larger hut with rooms for overnight stays. The current building is protected from lightning strikes and the innkeepers welcome tens of thousands of hikers with a smile each year.

After the descent back to Holzegg station, the route follows the foothills of the Grosser and Kleiner Mythen peaks to Zwüschet Mythen station and then down to Brunni, where the trail ends.
