The route is neither too long nor too hard. Ideal for stretching the bones after winter. The start and end are in Altstätten. Motorists can therefore enjoy this route.
The first 20 minutes from the train station you walk through the town of Altstätten, which is a small, charming town nestled among mountains and valleys in the eastern Swiss canton of Sankt Gallen. It has just 11,500 inhabitants who have been growing grapes and making wine here for over 1,000 years.
The route continues uphill to the mountain settlement of Fideren. You may get tired on this section, but the surroundings are beautiful. You pass small vineyards, and down behind you is the panorama of the town with snow-capped mountain peaks in the background. It is therefore worth stopping for a moment and looking back.
You have to be careful not to stray from the route, because there are several trails running through here. We got lost for a moment, but soon got back on track.
Along the way, we encountered various domesticated animals and came across a self-service outlet selling fresh eggs (scrambled with butter on Sunday). On hiking trails there are often, especially at farms, such points with local products, cheese, wine, honey, eggs. It is therefore worth having some change with you.
The return route runs mainly through the forest, along a stream. In April it was quite wet and slippery there, so be careful.
