Walenstadt train station. Bus no. 443 heading towards the Rehazentrum Walenstadtberg clinic is stuffed to the brim. This can only mean one thing, that the route is very attractive and has fantastic views to offer. This was also the case.

The Churfirsten mountain range

In my opinion, the Churfirsten range is one of the most beautiful and recognisable mountain ranges in Switzerland. It consists of more than a dozen peaks. However, it is seven of them that are the showpiece of the region and feature in many photographs.

We are talking about Selun (2,205 m), Frümsel (2,263 m), Brisi (2,279 m), Zuestoll (2,235 m), Schibenstoll (2,234 m), Hinterrugg (2,306 m) and Chäserrugg (2,262 m). They are located between the Upper Toggenburg and Lake Walen and belong to the Appenzell Alps. A trail leads to each of these peaks.

Rehazentrum Walenstadtberg – start of the trail

This time, however, we will not be climbing the Churfirsten ridge. This is because the route I have mapped out leads slightly lower, and starts at the impressive building of the rehabilitation clinic.

Its grand opening, then as a sanatorium for patients with lung diseases, took place in 1909. Decades later, when fewer and fewer people were suffering from tuberculosis, it was transformed into a renowned rehabilitation clinic. I suppose the views from the window of the surrounding peaks and the valley alone help with convalescence.

Route

The first kilometres of the trail take you up a tarmac road to the foot of the Churfirsten mountains. It is not easy, but the higher you get, the clearer and more spectacular the view of Lake Walen becomes. The section at the top is already much easier. Here you can rest and enjoy the views.

On the final stage, the road leads quite steeply downwards. In addition, the narrow paths were covered with a large layer of leaves in November. I therefore advise you to descend carefully and watch your step.

Tips for motorists

Motorists can leave their car at Walenstadt train station and take the bus to Rehazentrum Walenstadtberg, or start and finish the hike at the clinic itself. This will shorten the hike by about 40 minutes. There is a small car park under the trees at the clinic. I also noticed that drivers also parked higher up, on the side of the road.
