The route starts in the small village of Mels and continues through the forest at the foot of the mountains.
As is typical in autumn, we started our walk in thick fog. In such an aura, the forest looks amazing. Unfortunately, the impressive mountain ranges that surround the valley are not visible then.
Once we reached the highest point on the trail, we managed to break through these mists and enjoy the sunshine and the views. The first thing that caught our eye was the Churfirsten mountain range – a showpiece of the region. It is one of the most recognisable mountain ranges in Switzerland. And its shape can even be seen on the blue benches you pass on the route.
Descending further down, you reach the beautiful Berschnerfall, hidden deep in the forest. It is 46 metres high and even in the fog it makes an incredible impression. By the way, the entire section of the route that leads through the gorge is very attractive.
After leaving the gorge, you reach the edge of the small village of Berschis. This means that the hike is coming to an end. The forest is left behind and the paths lead through quiet residential areas.
The last section of the route runs between vineyards, straight into the town of Walenstadt, which is located on the beautiful Lake Walen.
Finally, there are some stairs to climb on the route (mainly near the waterfall) and there are also some small hills. Other than that, it goes quite smoothly and without much effort.
