The trail leading from the Ruogig cable car station to the next station, Eggberge, is a fantastic snowshoe route.
The snow-free paths are a lot of fun (provided you have snowshoes on your feet) and the area is quiet and peaceful. Sensational views round it all off.
First, however, is a ride of over 1,000 metres up the old-school Brügg-Eierschwand-Ruogig railway. The small red gondolas with seating for four people I had only seen in gardens so far, as decoration or a small gazebo. Therefore, I enjoyed the ride all the more. At the middle station – Eierschwand – you have to change to another, slightly larger gondola.
After an interesting ride, it’s time for a hike. The first point on the trail is the Fleschsee, completely hidden under snow in winter. And right next to it is a small mountain inn. I don’t know what kind of meals they serve there, but the view is unearthly. Just for the view alone, it is worth stopping there and basking in the sun.
A little higher up, beyond the lake, the view of Lake Uri opens up.
Once you reach the top of Hüenderegg (1’874 m), the path continues downhill to Eggberge station.
Last but not least, it is possible to buy a combined ticket for two trains at once (Kombibillette). It comes out a few francs cheaper. Just remember to bring cash, as there is no other way to pay for the ride.
